As the national capital sees a record surge in Covid infections, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today declared that Delhi will be under a weekend lockdown. The city saw its largest-ever regular increase in coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, with 17,282 new cases.

Since Sunday, more than 10,000 coronavirus cases are being recorded each day in the national capital as it battles the fourth Covid wave.

“We need to do something urgently to control the spike in Covid cases. For this, we have decided that there will be a weekend curfew in Delhi. However, let me make it clear that essential services will be allowed, and people who are getting married will be issued special passes,” the Chief Minister said today in a video address.

What’s allowed and what’s not allowed during the Delhi Weekend Lockdown:

1. Essential Services will be operating.
2. Gyms, pools and also the malls to remain closed.
3. Cinema halls have only 30 per cent capacity.
4. No dine-in allowed at the restaurants.
5. 1 weekly market allowed per day per zone.
6. Curfew passes for marriages.

The government has given the officials the right to take strict action against anyone who violates the Covid-19 protocols. Also, the government has also taken note of drug shortages in hospitals and directed concerned officials to ensure that required drugs for the care of Covid-19 patients are available.

“There is no shortage of COVID-19 beds in Delhi hospitals,” Kejriwal said. Over 5,000 beds are still available for COVID patients. Moreover, the government is making huge efforts to increase the number of beds in the city.

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal presided over today’s meeting, which resulted in the decision. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister, proposed a full lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays.
