Bollywood is frequently chastised for “blatantly mimicking” Hollywood. We’ve seen Bollywood filmmakers take a Hollywood film and either give it a desi touch or recreate it, as seen in Salaam-e-Ishq, Dil Bole Hadippa, Dostana, Partner, and Parineeti Chopra’s next film The Girl on the Train. There is no doubt that there are many Bollywood movies copied from Hollywood.
Where do Hollywood filmmakers obtain their ideas for their films, though? Bollywood, it turns out, isn’t always the answer. There have been instances where Hollywood filmmakers have drawn inspiration from their Bollywood counterparts.
We’ve put together a list of some of Bollywood movies copied from Hollywood for you.
#1 Satte Pe Satta – Seven Brides For Seven Brothers
Satte Pe Satta (1982), a popular comedy film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, as well as an ensemble cast, was a remake of Howard Keel’s 1954 classic Seven Brides for Seven Sisters.
#2 Vicky Donor – Delivery Man
Vicky Donor, a 2012 film starring Ayushmann Khurrana, tackled a topic that no one wants to talk about openly: infertility and sperm donation. That romantic comedy not only went on to become one of the most popular films of all time, but it also appears to have influenced the 2013 Hollywood film Delivery Man, starring Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, and Cobie Smulders.
#3 Chachi 420 – Mrs Doubtfire
Mrs. Doubtfire, one of America’s 1990s favourites, stars Robin Williams and his comedic talents. To spend more time with his family, Williams disguises himself as a maid and works in his ex-wife’s home. Chachi 420, a Bollywood hit film based on a Hollywood film, stars Kamal Haasan as the major character. While the plot themes are similar, Bollywood’s Mrs. Doubtfire contains her twist.
#4 God Tussi Great Ho – Bruce Almighty
The film Bruce Almighty, featuring Jim Carey and Morgan Freeman, is well-known for its outstanding performances. God Tussi Great Ho is in the same boat.
Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anupam Kher, and Amitabh Bachchan, among others, starred in the Bollywood adaptation. It’s a fantastic film with smart comic pieces and a well-developed storyline that will leave you feeling less stressed.
#5 Murder – Unfaithful
Actors Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat generated a similar uproar in Murder, two years after Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez made headlines with their sequences in the romance drama Unfaithful (2002). The popular Hollywood film about extramarital adapted into a Bollywood film back in 2004.
