The world uses One to Five Trillion plastic bags each year. Five trillion single-use plastic bags, if tied together, would cover an area twice the size of France. The government is phasing out single-use plastics (SUPs) next year. Indians will have to recognise and embrace alternatives to carry bags, straws, and cling film. India is banning plastic.
Moreover, the government has issued the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, which will limit the use of single-use plastics by 2022.
According to a notification dated August 12, the thickness of plastic carry bags will be increased from 50 microns to 75 millimetres on September 30, 2021. Furthermore to 120 microns on December 31, 2022. It also suggests that the plastic carry bags can be reused.
Additionally, with effect from September 30, 2021, non-woven plastic carry bags should not be less than 60 gram per square metre (GSM), according to the announcement.

- Plastic sticks for balloons
- Plastic flags
- Candy sticks
- Ice-cream sticks
- Thermocol for decoration
- Plastic plates
- Plastic cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays
- Wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes
- SUP invitation cards
- Cigarette packets,
- Plastic or PVC banners
Moreover, managed in an environmentally sustainable manner through the Extended Producer Responsibility of the producer, importer, and brand owner (PIBO) as per the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Moreover, the Ministry of the Environment has also established a national task force to coordinate efforts in this regard.

Also, the state and UT governments, as well as the relevant central ministries and departments, are to establish a comprehensive action plan for the eradication of SUP and the effective and timely execution of the laws.
