In a very inspiring development, the wife of an Indian Major martyred in the Pulwama Terrorist attack of 2019 will be following in her late husband’s footsteps. She will soon be joining the Indian army. The whole nation is very much aware of the fateful terrorist attack at Pulwama, Kashmir, not long ago.
In a tragic bomb blast, 40 paramilitary forces of the Indian army died and one among them was Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal. This brave soldier left behind an incredibly young, newlywed wife of 27 who had to lose him after just 9 months of marriage. At a young age, Nikita Kaul Dhoundiyal had to bid adieu to her husband while having to express pride for his sacrifice to India.
Nikita didn’t waste a moment in ensuring that his sacrifice didn’t go in vain. Like the true army wife that she was, Nikita recovered from her grief and enrolled in the Indian army. In just 6 months after Major Dhoundiyal left for his heavenly abode, Nikita filled the form for the Short Service Commission (SSC).
She cleared the examination with flying colours and even went on to clear the interview for the Short Services Selection Board (SSB). The next step in her mission was to complete the rigorous army training for which Nikita was commissioned at the Officer Training Academy at Chennai.
A little story backdrop of the Pulwama attack
On the 14th of February 2019, a deadly terror attack on a bus carrying CRPF Jawans claimed the lives of Central Reserve CRPF. This cowardly bomb blast was carried out by a Pakistan based Terror Group ‘Jaish e Mohammed’ where a Scorpio car filled with 350 kilograms of explosives was rammed into the CRPF bus. Suicide bomber Adil Ahmad who also goes by the name ‘Waqas Commando of Gundibagh’ was behind the wheel.
Adil Ahmad from Kakapora, Pulwama was arrested 6 times prior to the attack and was even released without any charges pressed. A mere 24-year-old, he was allegedly beaten by Indian police which led to him being radicalised and joining the terror outfit.
Pulwama changed India’s stance towards terror camps.
The dastardly Pulwama tragedy angered Indian citizens, pushing the government to retaliate against terror camps being harboured in Pakistan. The Balakot air strike followed the incident where major terror camps were destroyed by India.
There was nation wide apprehension against radical Islamists and a number of wanton incidents ensued like Kashmiris living in other part of India facing violence and harassment. Pulwama is also the event that led to the banning of Pakistani actors and artists from working in the Indian cinema and Television industry.
Lieutenant Nikita Kaul Dhoundiyal
Coming back to the hero of our story, the Pulwama Martyr’s wife is a true inspiration for the thousands of army wives who are left widowed after such cross-border terror strikes. She has paved the way for them and for Indian women in particular to bravely step forward in protecting the country. She has also demonstrated that a martyr should not be grieved but should be celebrated for his/her sacrifices. On the 29th of May 2021, Lieutenant Nikita Kaul Dhoundiyal will be stepping into her shoes as a Major in the Indian army. We are confident that she will make both her country as well as her deceased husband proud by showing true patriotism.
