PM Modi To Chair A Meeting Today Amidst Rising Cases

As India witnesses a second straight day of more than 1 lakh cases, both the state governments and the centre are in a challenging situation. Owing to the increasing cases, the likes of Delhi, Maharashtra, and many others have put on strict rules and weekend lockdowns. The schools, colleges, and gyms are close again. Meanwhile, even the political parties face the brunt this time. The Election Commission has barred the political parties from doing rallies till 15th January, it was announced yesterday amidst rising cases in India.

Keeping all the problematic situations and the sudden increase in the number of positive cases in India, the Prime Minister will chair a meeting today at 4:30 pm to review the affairs. The new Omicron variant is not as dangerous as the previous Delta variant. However, the rise in cases has been a worry for the government. Additionally, the country has recorded 552 new cases of the omicron virus in the last 24 hours. However, the total number of cases across the country is 1,59,632 cases across the country. This is the largest since May 2021. 

Elections In India Amidst Rising Cases

All the states and union territories are seeing a surge in the cases. Maharashtra and Delhi are again on the top of increasing cases in the country. Moreover, states like Odisha and West Bengal also report higher cases than in the last six months. In the last meeting for reviewing the situation, on 23rd December, the Prime Minister said to remain safe amidst the spread of the omicron variant. 

Elections In India Amidst Rising Cases

Meanwhile, yesterday the Election Commission also announced the schedule for the upcoming elections in the five states. These are Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur. As the election rallies are suspended until 15th January, the parties will turn to the digital mode to promote the leaders. The voting for the same will start from 10th February and will continue till 7th March. The counting of the votes will take place on 10th March
