2. The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019) – Documentary:
The Inventor documentary investigates the rise of Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, who was acclaimed for being the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. Titled the next Steve Jobs, and a tycoon of silicon valley, she dropped out of Stanford University at 19 to create a revolutionary blood-testing machine. The founder of Theranos, their blood tests claimed to require only a tiny drop of blood to detect diseases.
Elizabeth’s mission was to make this device available to all and open the doors to early diagnosis. But the catch here was that the entire company was built on a lie. The blood-testing machines weren’t functional and didn’t work as Elizabeth claimed. Yet she persuaded investors to fund millions of dollars in her company. Well, how did she manage to do all of that? The Fyre Festival fraud made elaborate promises to many people who spent a fortune on the tickets. But the promise of being the greatest festival ended up in lack of accommodation. Most partygoers who attended the festival had to sleep in tents on dirt floors, survive on stale bread sandwiches and put up with canceled musical events.
Most people bought into the scam because it was promoted by influencers and models like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. The Fyre Festival scandal went viral and created a huge buzz on social media spaces like Instagram and Twitter. 4. John Tucker Must Die (2006)
John Tucker Must Die is a cult classic teen movie that’s still relevant. If you are into early 2000’s romcom movies, then this one is for you. John Tucker Must Die is a revenge story. The plot revolves around a trio of girls who got cheat on by a popular, smooth-talking guy. John Tucker secretly dates all three of them at the same time. The girls choose to destroy the guy by making him unpopular, but the plan backfires.
The three friends then alter their approach and begin attacking him with a different strategy. The girls work to bring down Tucker with the help of the new transfer student who agrees to get together with him and dump him later. 5. Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl (2011):
And finally, Bollywood’s one and only conman movie. Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl is a Bollywood rom-com starring Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. Ricky, a con-man, scams three women from different cities for their money. He pretends to belong to different professions. The three women encounter each other and decide to take revenge by conning him back. They hire a smart salesgirl played by Anushka Sharma, to act as bait to catch the conman.
Ishika introduces herself to ‘Ricky’ as the daughter of an NRI hotelier visiting Goa on business to invest in real estate. They plan to entice him into a business partnership and steal his wealth as a form of retaliation. Similar to the plot of John tucker must die, the women unite and use their intelligence to achieve what they desire. This movie is also very similar to the true story of the Tinder Swindler.
