The Met Gala 2021 is here and this year, the theme is ‘America: The Lexicon of Fashion’. It wasn’t until last year when the ‘Camp’ theme caught everybody’s attention with the over-the top outfits worn by celebrities that we actually took note of what this event is about. If you still don’t understand what the Met gala is, here is everything you need to know.
What’s the Met Gala?
The Met Gala scheduled for the 13th of September this year is an event that takes place every year. That is with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Dubbed as ‘fashion’s biggest night out’, its a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Mueum of Art, New York. Every year, a new met gala theme is assigned. Celebs dress to impress as per the theme. The most popular theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion for the 2019 Meta Gala. The Camp theme was to dress up in almost outrageous fashion. The star-studded attendees of the Met gala fight to come up with spectacular red-carpet looks by collaborating with famous designers every year. Before we remember past looks, let’s quickly see how Kim Kardashian turned up for the Met ’21.
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s remember 5 unforgettable met gala looks:
1. Priyanka Chopra at Camp 2019:
Who can forget Priyanka Chopra’s ensemble at her third Met appearance in 2019? Her Dior Spring 2018 gown was topped off with a dramatic cage crown, make-up and hair which made her the subject of a ton of memes.
2. Rihanna at China 2015:
Rihanna’s blinding yellow ‘omelette gown’ was the butt of numerous memes and jokes. The theme of the 2015 Met was ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ and Rihanna wore Chinese designer Guo Pei topped with a Diamente headdress. Her horizontal brows completed the look.
3. Cardi B at Heavenly Bodies, 2018:
The 2018 Met gala which was themed ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination’ saw Cardi B walk down the red carpet in her full pregnant splendour wearing a Moschino by Jerremy Scott.
4. Kim Kardashian, Camp 2019:
We saw Kim’s skin tight couture silicone dress by Thierry Mugler which is definitely one of the unforgettable looks on the Met. Kim’s outfit was created to resemble water drops dripping from her nude self emerging out of the ocean. Apparently, Kim neither had mobility, nor could she pee in her outfit and took hours to put it on.
5. Katy Perry, Camp 2019:
The pop sensation turned up as a literal chandelier at the Met, 2019 complete with lit candlesticks encircling her forehead and waist which she wore with a custom Moschino gown.
